Keeping watch over the Patio de las Escuelas Menoras directly in front of the main entrance to the University is a statue of Fray Luis de León. An important writer and theologian from the second half of the Spanish Renaissance, he was arrested by the Inquisition for having translated the Song of Solomon into Spanish. After five years in jail, he returned to class and resumed his lecture with the words, “As I was saying yesterday…”
