Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Candelária

The next stop on our tour of downtown Rio was the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Candelária. As the history has it, the original church, which dates from the late 16th century, was constructed by a ship's captain who was nearly shipwrecked at sea. Upon his safe return to Brazil, he vowed to erect a church dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Candelária.

The present-day church was built between 1775 and 1894, and Nossa Senhora de Candelária existed as the largest and wealthiest church in imperial Brazil, with the interior being a combination of Renaissance and Baroque influences.
