Coliseo

The Colosseum, located in downtown Rome, is the largest elliptical-shaped amphitheater built in the Roman empire. Its construction began under the direction of emperor Vespasian between 70 and 72 AD, and the finishing touches were added in approximately 80 AD, under Titus.

Originally boasting of a seating capacity of 80,000, the amphitheater was used to host gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, as well as dramas based on Classical mythology.
