The next day, to celebrate Brian’s birthday, we took a bus to Guadix, which is a little town that is literally dug into the rock basin of what was once a prehistoric lake just outside of Granada.
What distinguishes Guadix from the rest of Spain and much of the rest of Europe is that almost half of its residents live in cuevas casas (cave houses). This is a shot of the Barriada de Cuevas (a residential area made up of caves) as seen from the Mirador Cerro de la Bala, where the Sierra Nevada forms the backdrop to a valley covered in chimneys sticking out of the surrounding rock.
Needless to say, it was raining, so Brian and I were soaked by the time that we found our way to the cave neighborhood!
