Città del Vaticano

The next day, we went to the Città del Vaticano (Vatican City), which is officially a sovereign city-state located within the city limits of Rome. Encompassing an area of 110 acres with a population of approximately 900, Vatican City is officially the smallest state in the world. It came into existence as a city state in 1929 with the inception of the Lateran Treaty in the same year.

Perhaps most importantly, Vatican City is famous because it is ruled by the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. Traditionally the popes have been residing in this area since the return from Avignon in 1377.
