Walking Tour of Morelia

After we got back to Morelia from Tzintzuntzan, I decided to walk around Morelia with my new friends from the conference, Laura and Gerardo. We started our little tour around dusk and decided to call it a night just after dark.

Museo Regional Michoacano Sept 2008

Just a few blocks from where I was staying, the Museo Regional Michoacano is located inside a late-18th-century baroque palace.

On display was a number of different pre-Hispanic artifacts, colonial art and relics. In the stairwell was a mural by Alfredo Zalce entitled Cuauhtémoc y la Historia.

Catedral de Morelia, México

My first full day in Morelia I ventured out to the city’s cathedral before I had to check in for the conference.

This is the Wikipedia blurp to give you a little bit of information about the cathedral:

Morelia Cathedral is a baroque cathedral and its two 70-metre towers dominate the skyline of the city of Morelia, Michoacán, México. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Morelia. Work began on the cathedral on 6 Augusts 1660, and it was completed 84 years later, in 1744.

Hotel Casino. Michoacán, México.

Set front and center on the main plaza in Morelia, the Hotel Casino was perfect for my stay.

As luck would have it, I ended up staying in the same room that pop-star Julieta Venegas stayed in while she was on tour in Mexico.

For me, it was a riot having such a huge room (equipped with two bathrooms and a kitchenette) all for one person!
