Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Illinois

First on our agenda last Saturday was the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site which is located in Cahokia, Illinois, just on the other side of the Mississippi River from St. Louis.

The earthen mounds scattered across the 2,200-acre tract of land is a showcase of the remains of the most developed indigenous civilization north of Mexico. According to archaeologists, the mounds at Cahokia once formed a large metropolis which was inhabited from approximately A.D. 700 to 1400. For more information, see the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site Official Website.

A visit to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site includes not only access to the grounds to explore the various mounds but also entrance to the Interpretive Center which houses an exhibition on the history of the site.
