Miguel de Unamuno

At the top of the stairs inside the department, there is a statue of Miguel de Unamuno, a famous Spanish author who is known as one of the founding figures of Generación de ‘98.

In 1900, he became the rector of the University. Passionately opposed to the dictatorship, he encouraged his students to follow his lead. He was at odds with General Miguel Primo de Rivera's 1923 coup, which eventually caused him to be dismissed from the University; some years later, however, he was triumphantly reinstated.
